Hellingly 4XI 178-10 lost to Seaford 4XI 179-9 (10/05/08)

Seaford 4XI won a thriller in their first match of the season away at Hellingly.

Simon Pitts won the toss and put Hellingly into bat and they got off to the perfect start when Dan Smedley took 3 wickets in his first 2 overs getting swing and bounce to reduce them to 9-3.Some wayward bowling brought Hellingly into the match and Mark Hickman made a good 64. Young spinner Mitch Wood took 2 wickets before Smedley returned to mop up the tail taking 3 wickets to finish with his best figures of 6-36 as Hellingly were bowled out for 178.

In reply, after an initial good start, regular wickets fell as Seaford were reduced to 72-6 and staring at defeat. This brought together the old heads of Tom Taylor, on his debut for the club and skipper Simon Pitts who put on 75 in 16 overs before Taylor was out for an impressive 65. There was then a partnership of 25 between father and 13 year old son Tom Pitts which inched Seaford towards their target before Pitts junior was out with only 6 required.

This brought in last man 10 year old Callum Wright, a late call up who was luckily at the non strikers end. It was death or glory time with the field spread to give the single in order to have a go at young Master Wright. They managed to scamper a two before Simon Pitts straight drove the winning boundary ending 39 not out as Seaford reached 179-9.

An excellent game, played in a very good spirit between the sides. Next week Seaford 4Xi have a home friendly at the Salts against St James Jacobean.
